THE eyes of the sporting world were on Manchester during the first week of the Commonwealth Ganes and that the city passed the strict inspection with flying colours, writes Mike Crockett.
The city centre was alive with the beat of African drums, Jamaican steel bands and street performances from all five continents, as part of the Spirit of Friendship Festival.
Bright sunshine and near-flawless organisation served to make it the best party seen in Manchester for years. When the athletics events finished, there was is still a feast of sport remaining - with table tennis, swimming, rugby, squash, weightlifting and hockey, there was something for everyone.
On my travels from venue to venue and back again, the main feeling was one of camaraderie. A bottle of water was passed round here, a door held open for you there - the little things added up to one heartwarming whole.
Eleven athletics sessions at the stadium - which has transformed the previously run-down East Manchester - were virtual sell-outs as the people of the North West of England and beyond welcomed the Commonwealth to their city.
Even the usual rivalry between competing reporters and photographers was put on hold, with quotes, information and even camera batteries being swapped like blue smarties at a kids' party.
One Nigerian journalist I spoke to in the press box was delighted with the welcome he had received.
"This is my first foreign trip with the Nigerian team. I have had a very friendly welcome and so have our athletes. The crowd here cheers everyone, not just the British people," he said, beaming.
"Manchester will always be in my heart now."
