HOUSEHOLDERS across the borough are being urged to participate in a recycling campaign.
The initiative gets underway when the new editions of the Manchester South and Manchester Central Yellow Pages - sporting sandcastles on the front cover - are delivered across the area.
The campaign is being run by Trafford council and supported by the directory recycling scheme, which is sponsored by Yellow Pages. The aim is to collect thousands of old Yellow Pages and recycle them in special collection banks.
A grant from the directory recycling scheme has boosted the move.
Throughout August and September, banks clearly displaying Yellow Pages recycling stickers will be sited at Oakfield Road car park, Altrincham, and Asda supermarket car park, Barton Dock Road, Trafford Park.
All Yellow Pages collected will be recycled into cardboard packaging.
Glenn Stuart, waste manager with Trafford council, said: "Throughout Trafford, there is the potential to save 15-20 tonnes of Yellow Pages from landfill. We hope that having these special banks will be a great encouragement to our residents to recycle their old directories."
Adam Billiald, co-ordinator of the directory recycling scheme, said: "Supporting local authorities to recycle directories is a major environmental strategy for Yellow Pages. I encourage everyone to do their bit and take their directory along to one of the recycling banks."
