PELICAN'S second pre-season friendly produced another high scoring game.
In truth, the 8-0 scoreline was a little unkind to second division Kartel, who had plenty of the game in the first half and caused Pelican some problems despite the absence of a couple of their regular players.
Pelican keeper Ron Dunn had to be on his toes to keep out a couple of good efforts that could have given Kartel the lead.
However, it was Pelican who went in front on 20 minutes when new signing Rob Marr got among the goals again, firing home from Tony Redshaw's cut back.
Marr was on the mark again five minutes later, this time guiding home a Gary Royle cross to make it 2-0 at the break.
Within five minutes of the re-start Pelican were 4-0 up.
First Brian Baxter set up Greg Calder whose first effort was well blocked by Kartel keeper Grant Slade, but Calder clipped home the rebound.
Then two minutes later Baxter curled a left footer just inside the post.
This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Kartel and as this was their first match they began to tire.
Pelican had one game under their belts and the extra fitness showed as they began to notch up the goals.
Greg Calder set up Steve Bennett for number five and then Bennett headed home the sixth from a Paul Lowe cross.
Brian Baxter scored the goal of the match on 70 minutes with a spectacular diving header and the final goal in the dying minutes followed a goal mouth scramble.
Kartel deserved a better fate and they showed in the first half that they could be contenders for the division two title this term.
Pelican know that there are harder games ahead, but its good to get into the goal scoring habit early.
