ALTRINCHAM has changed beyond all recognition in the last 100 years but some things stay the same - like locals craving for fish and chips.
Joanne's Chippy in Borough Road celebrates its centenary this year and proprietor Chris Booth says one way he'll be inviting customers to join in the celebrations is by offering them their favourite food at a knock down price.
"Unfortunately we don't know the precise date that it opened but we're thinking of offering fish and chips at a discount price on one particular day. I don't think we can do them at 1901 prices", he says.
"It's a good nutritious meal when it's done well. You can have a portion of fish and chips and you won't be hungry again until teatime. It's a design classic, like the Mini or Wrangler jeans,, says the former wedding photographer.
He also says fish and chips are a healthy option because fish and potatoes contain a number of proteins and vitamins.
Chris believes the secret of survival lies in the fact that his concern has always used the best ingredients.
The shop has been a family business since 1979 and it used to be owned by Chris's mum, who retired five years ago. Although the business has changed hands, he's kept the previous owner's name.
* Chris is trying to find out more about the history of his business and he would like to hear from Marjorie Sumner who ran the chip shop from 1936 to 1947. If you are her or know of her whereabouts, contact Chris on 928 3591.
