I WRITE in response to Alan Davies' protest at tree felling outside Wellacre High School on Irlam Road.
I share Alan's concern about the trees which were felled to make way for a new bus lay-by outside the school. What Alan doesn't realise is that councillors have been presented with ser-ious concerns from teach-ers, parents and others about the safety of people, particularly children, because of the buses that stop outside the school.
We were informed of significant dangers for children who attend the school and received a request for a bus lay-by. Anyone who lives in the area will know from their own experiences that the situation in that location was very dan-gerous.
Councillors agreed unanimously that a new lay-by should be con-structed for the school buses to park, to attempt to reduce the dangers to children. A survey of residents took place and the matter was discussed at the Area Board meet-ing. This consultation resulted in very little opposition to the scheme.
Councillors would have preferred not to cut any of the trees down. However, we were informed that some of the trees would need to be removed to make way for the lay-by. On balance, it was felt that the safety of road users, particularly our children, is paramount and although this was a difficult decision to make, I believe it was the right one.
Alan has been on the phone to me many times over many years about many things and, quite frankly, on occasions sometimes he has been rude to me. Under these circumstances I do not feel obliged to take his calls in the future.
Cllr David Acton, leader of Trafford council.
