A MOTHER burst into tears after an inquest failed to establish who had given her daughter a fatal dose of methadone.

Alcoholic Siobhan Purdy, 26, was found dead in bed next to her heroin addict lover at his flat in Wythenshawe.

After Rory Cavanagh had denied giving Siobhan any of his methadone supply, Manchester coroner Leonard Gorodkin returned a verdict of misadventure on the former Sale Grammar School pupil.

The hearing was adjourned last month to give the Purdy family the opportunity to quiz Mr Cavanagh about Siobhan's last 48 hours.

After the verdict Mrs Christina Purdy broke down and screamed: "I hope the person responsible rots in hell".

"My daughter was beautiful not only in looks but as a person as well - I'm fighting for her reputation".

Miss Purdy, of Old Hall Road, Sale Moor, died from an excessive ingestion of methadone and alcohol.

At an earlier hearing it was disclosed she had used cocaine in the past but was not addicted - and was never prescribed methadone by her GP.

The last two people to see Siobhan alive were Mr Cavanagh and friend Donna Brown, an ex-heroin user, and both were on methadone programmes.

They denied giving Siobhan any methadone and Mr Cavanagh said she had consumed two bottles of wine and used cocaine at the flat.

"I loved and respected Siobhan and I have never given her any kind of drugs", he said.

The coroner said Miss Purdy must have got the methadone from somebody "but there is no proof where it came from".

"I know how desperate and distressed the family are but we cannot produce facts that are not given", concluded Mr Gorodkin.
