ALTRINCHAM Grammar School for Boys were fifteen minutes away from a clean sweep of successes in rugby matches against Bolton School.

After recent disappointments the 1st XV took an early try converted by Simon Edwards.

With increasing confidence, AGS put together some tidy passages of play before apiece of individualism from fly half Edwards led to a try under the posts for Alex Glover. Converted again by Simon Edwards.

Bolton replied with a try and a penalty but AGS seemed to be in control at half time.

The second half saw an element of complacency creep in to the play with the first victory of the season in sight.

As is so often the case, the opposition created a moment of pressure and scored a converted try to go ahead 17-14. Despite renewed vigour from AGS, Bolton held on to win the game.

The under 15s put on an excellent display of rugby with forwards and backs linking cleverly in some exciting passages of open play.

AGS were 26 points to the good at half time with tries form Peter King, Tom Crompton and Mike Marsden while Stephen Budworth converted three.

Encouraged at half time to keep up the work and not become complacent Deah Harris and Jamie Hieson scored further tries with Stephen Budworth kicking one more conversion to give AGS a 43-0 victory.

The under 14s were also victorious but had a much closer game and only just pulled ahead in the closing stages to win 26-22.

Try scorers were Liam Heaney (2)m Daniel Jankum and Jamie Rutter. Danny Harvey and Liam Heany kicked three conversions.

Chris Davies scored two tries for the under 13s as they had a fairly comfortable win 24-7.

Alex Howell and Andrew McGuire also touched down with Scott Hayes converting twice.

In the football matches against Reddish Vale HS, David Shaw certainly made his mark with a hat-trick for the under 15s as they had the better of the 7-3 result. Andrew Thompson scored twice with Nick Scholes and Daniel Fearson adding the others.

The under 13s game was a really hard fought affair that ended with honour even at 3-3. Jack Entwistle scored an absolute beauty from 30 yards; Daniel Harrison calmly tucked away a penalty and Duncan McDonald was again on the score sheet.

After their successful start to the season the under 12s were brought back to earth with a 4-1 defeat. Emmanuel scored the solitary AGS goal.
