A BRAVE youngster came to the rescue when a group of teenagers were mugged on the Metrolink on Monday night.

The five fifteen year-olds, three girls and two boys, were travelling back on the Metrolink at 10.30pm after a day out in Blackpool.

They were approached by two older youths on the tram in Manchester. They threatened them and demanded money, before taking £20 from one of the boys.

Although the tram was busy, nobody went to help the Jeff Joseph Technology College pupils until the girl got on.

She started talking to the offenders, and persuaded them to give them their money back.

The mother of one of the group now wants to thank the girl. Ann Hughes, of Helsby Road in Sale, whose daughter, Leonie, was threatened by the thugs, said: "I think she was very brave.

"There were lots of people on the tram who did nothing to help, so I think what she did was wonderful.

"The group were very scared at the time, so they didn't find out where the girl was from. I'd just like to say I'm very grateful for what she did."
