TRAFFORD pensioners on low income or benefits can now get free security for their homes.
The move is part of a £12 million Government scheme launched nationally in June to halt the growing number of thefts from elderly people's houses.
And residents in the borough are being invited to apply after Greater Manchester was designated as 'an area of higher crime' by Home Office chiefs.
To get involved in the scheme, pensioners need to call the freephone number on 0800 316 6015 and pass on their details to officials.
They will then be contacted direct to arrange a site visit from a checked surveyor who will check the security needs as well as heating and insulation at the house.
Community safety officer at Altrincham police, PC Tony Crompton tells SAM: "This is a great idea and one which could benefit a vast amount of pensioners throughout Trafford.
"By phoning the freephone number, you can register your details and arrange for a surveyor to visit.
"When they have a look around your home they will be able to decide what you need to make the house more secure - ranging from locks, chains and spy holes to bolts and window catches."
PC Crompton says that front or main doors should normally have two locks as well as a chain and spyhole while back doors should have one mortise deadlock and two bolts.
Locks should also be fitted to all ground floor and accessible windows and sliding patio doors and these can be provided by this unique scheme.
He goes on: "Applicants who qualify will have the equipment fitted professionally and be advised on how to use it at no cost at all.
"So if you are over 60 years old and living in Trafford as well as receiving income support or other benefits then call 0800 316 6015 today!"
