A NEW scheme is hoping to combat the growing number of under age drinkers throughout Trafford.

For bobbies are to target those adults who buy alcohol for youngsters from the borough's off licences.

It is a new approach for crimebusters after previous operations focused on the owners of the late opening stores.

Sgt Tim Bray from Altrincham tells SUM: "It is a constant problem and one which is a growing concern to all in Trafford.

"We have carried out a number of schemes over the years which have involved warnings to shops selling to under age youths.

"The problem has been that most youngsters are wise to the fact that they are unlikely to get served and usually ask adults to get alcohol for them."

Sgt Bray adds that this has become a regular occurrence and one which the police are now hoping to address.

He goes on: "We have distributed posters to community centres, shops and off licences to warn people about buying drink for teenagers.

"Following this we will monitor the effect around Trafford - especially in hot-spot areas where there is a high level of under age drinking.

"It is then a case of enforcing the law which entitles us to confiscate all alcohol from adults - not just what they have bought for youngsters."

Officers hope that this latest bid to curb youths drinking in streets and parks will prove successful.

And they want all adults to think twice before helping young drinkers get their beer.

Sgt Bray concludes: "By educating adults we hope to close this avenue for youngsters intent on drinking under the legal age.

"It is something that has become widespread and often leads to other problems such as unruly and threatening behaviour."
