They have bounced back from the threat of folding up last year to lay on a host of top attractions and entertainment at Woodsend Park, Flixton.

There is free admission to the field for the 32nd carnival, on Saturday (September 2) from 11am.

A grand parade will set off from Church Road/ Chassen Road, Urmston at 12.30pm on the big day. It heads along Station Road, Crofts Bank Road and Moorside Road to Woodsend Park. Crowds in Urmston centre will be entertained by street entertainers before the parade passes through.

Musical treats will also be provided by South Carolina Jazz Band and Manchester and District Boys Brigade.

The event at Woodsend Field includes 'picnic in the park' from 12.30pm, a dog display team (1pm and 3.45pm), escapologist Nick Janson (1.45pm and 4.30pm), 'walk the plank - picnic in the park' (3.15pm), and The Ideal New Orleans Parade Band (2.35pm).

Up and coming bands and acts going though their paces at the field include Ami Richardson, Embryonic, Feel the Steel, Laura Hennis, Sambrio and Sam King, and there will also be dance and fitness demonstrations.

The carnival again has its 'royalty' after an absence of six years - with a parade of Queen Laura, Princess Hayley Michelle and Rosebud Meggan at 3pm.

There will also be a wide range of dancing competitions and a grand holiday draw with a prize of a break at Spain's Costa Blanca.

Eric May, the chairman of the carnival committee, says: "Last year we were thinking it was going to be our last carnival. But with a good response from the public and picking up a few more committee members - of which we never have enough - it is all systems go. With everyone's help this will be the greatest carnival ever seen in the area."

"It is a year long effort from start to finish to produce a successful carnival, so I can say a personal 'thankyou' to everybody, especially the dedicated committee members."
