CAR parks can be a regular feature of 'hotspot' statistics when it comes to car crime - with latest figures showing that a third of all reported incidents happen in car parks.

The concentration of vehicles in a small area has prompted calls from motorists and police alike for security to be improved.

Police say a parked vehicle presents a golden opportunity for a thief - although the risk can be reduced by ensuring that the car is locked and and devices like steering locks and alarms are used.

They are teaming up with Trafford council in a bid to ensure that the borough's car parks are safe and secure.

PC Paul Berry, community safety officer at Stretford, told SAM: "Where a driver parks his or her car is important and choosing the right location will assist in reducing the risk to both them and the vehicle.

"That is why we are involved in the 'Secure Car Parks Award' scheme, which has been identified as the way forward for all aspects of car park security."

The scheme - run by the Association of Chief Police Officers - recognises car park operators who create a safe place for drivers and the long term goal is to ensure that every one in Trafford meets the required standard.

PC Berry says: "There are a number of places that are already meeting the standards required including the 10,000 spaces at the Trafford Centre and the new hotel close to Manchester United FC.

"The new extension to the Old Trafford football ground will also involve extra parking places which will be managed to the required standard."

To receive the award, a car park must have design and management methods that create a safe environment, good lighting and surveillance and quality access for both people and vehicles.

"It is the aim that all motorists should feel safe wherever they park their car and we urge people wanting advice on recognised sites to contact us," adds PC Berry.
