TRAFFORD could soon be the home to a new multi-million pound museum paying tribute to the victims of the Holocaust.

The Shoah Centre is earmarked for the site on Trafford Wharf Road which is set to be the base for the Lowry Centre and the Imperial War Museum - North early next year.

And the £7 million project has the backing of Trafford council as well as many groups in the Jewish community across Manchester.

It is another significant development along the Manchester Ship Canal - but is relying on a successful National Lottery bid for funds.

President of the project Sir Sidney Hamburger said: "The museum is largely dependent on the Lottery money, but there is a strong team behind us and we are confident of success."

The museum will trace the full horror of the Holocaust where over six million Jewish people perished and will tell the story through the eyes of victims.

Chairman of the centre, Bill Williams, added: "The emphasis will be on the experiences of individuals, families and communities and the aim is it will be a different approach to usual."

The concept for the museum was first considered six years ago and it is hoped that the plans can be realised with the support of land owners Peel Holdings.

And a stunning building designed by Imperial War Museum architect Daniel Libeskind has already been drawn up.

Sir Sidney concluded: "The museum will be an educational experience to show today's societies the horror of indifference and how the holocaust affected the Jewish community around the world.

"We hope it will prove successful and we must thank Trafford council for all its help and encouragement which has kept us all excited about the proposals."
