TOWN centre rangers could soon be drafted into Altrincham to give a helping hand to shoppers.

The nine strong uniformed force could be patrolling the streets this summer if the £96,000 scheme gets the go-ahead.

Their role will include guiding and advising visitors, helping keep the town centre spic and span, and reporting and highlighting crime and safety issues.

Town centre manager Rebecca Nugent says the project will be a shot in the arm for Altrincham - similar schemes in Manchester and Stockport have been very successful.

Trafford council is linking up with environmental body Groundwork Manchester on the scheme for eight rangers and a supervisor. They will be financed with an £86,000 grant from the 'New Deal' scheme, aimed at getting people aged between 18 and 25 off the dole queue.

Another £10,000 grant for items such as uniforms will be provided by the council.

Members of the policy and resources committee will consider the project next week.

Rebecca says: "The rangers will provide a very big boost for Altrincham and everyone has been very positive about this.

"Their role would include environmental projects and audits. They could highlight and deal with a range of issues, for example flyposters and pavement problems.

"They would also have a community safety and crime prevention role, liaising with police and having a two way radio link with shops.

"They would generally be there to help shoppers, offering advice and information.

"We would use the rangers to keep the area tidy, improving the look and attractiveness of the town centre."

Although the initial funding period is 12 months, it is hoped the project would be extended beyond that as it has been in other areas.
