COLIN Graham was quite right t o draw attention to the abuse of the archaic leasehold and ground rent laws (Readers' Write, March 25).
In 1997, Trafford council made representations to the Department of the Environment after a number of businesses were found to be exploiting the present inadequate laws and demanding punitive sums from people for alleged non-payment of ground rent.
I am pleased to say that the Government listened and has now issued a consultation paper which recognises that leasehold is a fundamentally un satisfactory tenure.
Trafford Council's trading standards division has taken the lead in welcoming this paper and I hope that it will not be long before legislation is introduced to stop the activities outlined.
Concerned residents can obtain a useful fact sheet from Trafford trading standards at Friars Court, Sibson Road, Sale M33 7SF.
Cllr Barry Brotherton, Sale.
