A DOG owner from Davyhulme has been left devastated after his beloved dog died in a collision with a car last week.

And heartbroken John Taylor from Welwyn Close says that the worst part about the whole affair is that he was on a zebra crossing with his six year old Norfolk Terrier at the time.

It was around 9.30pm on Tuesday while John was walking his dog Meg near to Davyhulme circle that the incident occurred.

John told SUM: "Meg was on a lead and we were crossing the Lostock Road side of the circle when a car came down to the junction at some speed.

"We were halfway across the zebra crossing and it seemed as if the car was trying to get through just before we crossed the road.

"I jumped out of the way but poor Meg was hit and although she was still alive, we rushed her to the vet's."

Sadly for John and his wife, Meg died from her injuries at around 4.15am on Wednesday and it has left the couple bitter.

A tearful John added: "The female driver stopped briefly some 50 yards after the collision but then drove away and all I could make out was that the car was a Burgundy Ford Escort.

"I contacted the police but without the registration number they said that they could do very little."

John says that it is a very distressing time for him and his wife as they had had Meg since she was a pup.

He went on: "It has left a big hole in our lives - but incidents such as this could be avoided if motorists reduced their speed.

"What if a little child had been on the crossing at the time - they would have stood no chance at all and there have already been a number of close calls on this busy road.

"Nevertheless it won't bring our Meg back and I hope that the driver feels some remorse and goes to the police."
