Hucknall 3

FLIXTON entertained top of the table Hucknall last Saturday and once again were left contemplating mistakes that cost them vital league points.

The combination of a very bumpy pitch and mid summer weather conditions did not allow either team the opportunity to play their usual pass and move football and it was clear that defensive errors would cost either team dearly.

Hucknall played to their strengths from the outset, shifting the ball from back to front as quickly as possible and then supporting the two front men from midfield, very rarely actually passing through the Flixton team. The two big strong central forwards proved a handful all afternoon for the Flixton defence and both were thwarted in the first ten minutes when in good situations against the Flixton keeper Bennett.

Bennett continued his impressive first half form with two outstanding saves from free kicks outside the area but it was becoming more apparent that a goal for the visitors was inevitable.

Flixton were just beginning to gain some good possession when defensive ball watching allowed Hucknall's central forward the opportunity to nip in between Martin and Bennett and round the keeper to slot home the opening goal.

Hogan had a good opportunity, just prior to the final first half whistle, which he squandered after good work down the right side by Garvey. A half time dressing down by manager McGreavy resulted in the home team beginning the second half in a more spirited fashion and having some control of the game.

Coyne was again working tirelessly upfront and using the ball effectively but his partner Banim had one of his less effective games having been man-marked throughout the game.

Again the the 60th minute defensive napping allowed Huchnall a one in one with the Flixton keeper and although the shot was mis-hit, it somehow squeezed past Bennett.

Somewhat spurred on by the 2-0 deficit Flixton immediately pulled a goal back. A deep free kick by Carroll found Hogan at the back post and his header from a very acute angle sailed over the advancing keeper.

With time running out and Flixton chasing the equaliser a mis-judgement by Bennett allowed the Huchnall left back to sneak in and head over the advancing keeper.

Manager McGrevy pepped things up immediately by bringing on Riches and Bromley and the later made an immediate impact by lashing a 25 yards drive into the bottom corner with only his second touch. Sadly it proved to late and Flixton were again beaten with silly mistakes costing them vital points in their bid to attain as high a place as possible in the Unibond League.

With difficult games remaining, Flixton will need to ensure their team work, and effort is one hundred per cent if they are to attain any points from their final games.

Next Saturday Flixton entertain lowly Whitley Bay in what should be a classic sixpointer.
