TRAFFIC calming has prevented scores of accidents in Trafford, according to council figures.

Monitoring of the areas where road safety measures have been in place for three years reveal the encouraging statistics.

A comparison of the number of accidents in a three year period before and after they were implemented show they have averted a whopping 134 accidents.

Leading councillor Len Murkin says that means many families have been saved the heartache and despair of a love one being injured, perhaps fatally.

And highway chiefs will press ahead with traffic calming to continue cutting the number of accidents. Cllr Murkin, the cabinet member for technical services, says: "These are very encouraging results and we will continue in our efforts to reduce accidents in the borough."
