A DISABLED pensioner says she is 'disgusted' she only gets 'half' a wheelie bin.

The woman has to share her bin with her neighbour on Baguley Lane, Sale Moor.

Other angry residents have also contacted the Messenger after bin men refused to take excess bags that won't fit in their wheelie bins.

But a council chief says he is confident wheelie bins will gain overwhelming support as people get used to them.

However, the fed-up pensioner with a shared bin says: "I was overcome to find that where I live you only get half a bin - the other half is my neighbour's. I think it is disgusting to have to share a bin."

She adds she and her elderly neighbours have trouble moving the bins to be collected.

Frustrated locals have also contacted the Messenger after bin men left behind excess rubbish sacks that wouldn't fit in their wheelie bin.

Furious mum Janice Grindrod says that refuse collectors took out a bag on top of her packed wheelie bin and left behind that and another one she left at the side of it.

Janice, who lives with her two daughters, aged 10 and five, in Hulme Road, Sale Moor, says: "I think it is terrible. They won't give me a larger bin because there are only three of us in the house."

Geoff Marsh, the council's principal environmental services manager, says he is aware of a complaint from a resident who shares a bin and was going to examine the situation. He adds in some places - such as sheltered housing or flats - it is more efficient to to have one large bin than a number of smaller ones. Residents are supplied with a 240 litre bin between two properties rather than two 140 litre bins.

He says: "In these properties in Sale Moor, we found it was difficult to store two 140 litre bins there. We are always open to discussion and if it is causing a lot of people problems we will review it."

On the issue of excess bags being left, he said people should compress their rubbish to fit it into the wheelie bin, but added that where five adults or more live at an address, or a large family, they will be provided with a larger or extra bin.

"A lot of people don't crush things like lemonade bottles while some put black bin bags in the wheelie bins - whereas if you tip the rubbish in or use small carrier bags there is more room."

If people have extra rubbish one week, they should use the miscellaneous collection service by calling Trafford Direct 2000 on 912 2000.
