IT ALMOST seems strange that an athletics club as internationally successful as Sale Harriers are stretched almost to breaking point.
The club is running short of volunteers to take on the day-to-day tasks which are a vital part of the Harriers success.
That was the message recently, as the club, at its 88th Annual General Meeting, reflected on another year of unrivalled success from the youngest member to those who have enjoyed top flight International competition.
Sale are proud to be the most successful club in Great Britain, but equally derive as much satisfaction for the work they undertake in the community.
Coaching clinics and schools meetings are held regularly, encouragining character building and self discipline.
The Harriers boast the best organised primary section in the country concentrating on the development of young athletes at Crossford Bridge.
Once the direction of the boy or girl concerned has been determined, more specialised coaching is arranged at Wythenshawe Park where all-weather facilities are available.
The BBC intends to highlight athletes prominently on television during the next few years and there will be a definite input from Sale leading up to and during the forthcoming commonweath games.
However such commitment and added responsibilities have their problems meaning those within the club are stretched to the limit and it is now necessary to recruit help from outside in a number of areas.
Anyone with a sporting background is sought, in order to be trained to coach in any of the running, jumping and throwing events.
Officiating - Likewise, assistance will be given and various courses are available to become a track or field official.
Administration - There are many variations such as management and all forms of clerical and community work.
Public Relations - To expand the name of the club and generate funds through sponsorship and other means.
Social - Helping to organise social functions, the sale of kit and refreshments etc.
