Summer's has finally arrived and it’s time to get out the folding chairs, stack the picnic hamper with goodies and head off to Dunham Massey for its annual outdoor theatre season.
This year, Heartbreak Productions, which is celebrating 20 years of outdoor theatre, performed The Taming of the Shrew earlier this month and the second play in Dunham’s outdoor season is Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’.
Whether you’ve read the book, seen the films, or enjoyed theatrical productions, the tale of the Bennett family and its ambition to rise through the ranks of society remains a strong favourite – as of course does the erstwhile Mr Darcy.
You can see Heartbreak’s production of this classic tale on Saturday, July 2.
We all know Pinocchio – the story of a wood carver’s puppet whose quest to become a ‘real boy’ sees him have to prove himself brave, honest and generous. Director Peter Mimmack saw parallels between Pinocchio’s story and that of the scout organisation – where good citizenship in young people is nurtured through non-formal education and emphasis on practical activities in the outdoors.
So - in this performance, Pinocchio’s character has been ‘re-carved’ for today’s audience – woodcraft, camp life, endurance, chivalry, life saving – and of course lots of music and fun – are the ingredients of this famous tale. Pinocchio comes to Dunham Massey on Saturday, July 23.
Sarah Talbot is Dunham’s Visitor Services Manager.
“Our outdoor theatre season remains one of our most popular events throughout the entire year” said Sarah. “ It gives you a feeling that summer’s really arrived, and here at Dunham we have such fantastic scenery as backdrop to some great theatrical productions.
"We’re delighted to be hosting Heartbreak in its twentieth season of outdoor productions – so all the more reason to come and join us for these magical evenings”.
All outdoor theatre performances begin at 7pm. Please bring your own picnics and seating. Tickets to all performances are £14 adult, £9 child and must be booked in advance by calling 0161 941 1025.
Pride & Prejudice is suitable for children aged 7 years and over, Pinocchio for children aged 5 and over.
