IT will be a highlight of an athletics career that spans more than half a century when Bowdon resident Alan Hardman carries the Olympic torch.

Alan, aged 80 will carry the torch in Prestwich on June 23.

And the founder of Altrincham and District Athletic Club 51 years ago says he is looking forward to once again getting his running kit on.

He said: “I am pleased to be chosen. I have been involved in athletics for 51 years and this is one of the highlights.”

Alan retired from competing aged 73 and is still an active member of Altrincham and District Athletic Club, serving as both chairman and secretary for 10 years.
