AN under 12s football team from Aston-on-Mersey has managed to secure two new sponsors after a year of ‘very hard work’.
The Ashton-on-Mersey Vipers lost their manager and were down to just five players at the end of the 2020/2011 season, and a crisis meeting was held to discuss how the team would avoid folding.
The new manager, Dave Atkinson, appealed for new players in the Messenger and, after a difficult few weeks, a full team was put forward to enter into the Timperley and District Junior Football League.
The news sponsors, Flaktwoods of Sale and Styles and Wood in Broadheath cannot have come soon enough according to Dave.
“Previously the home shirts were bought by the parents and the away shirts were made up of tatty old away shirts from previous seasons, containing different sponsor logos and didn’t match, so the new shirts were badly needed.”
Flaktwoods will sponsor the home shirt and Styles and Wood the away shirt.
The Vipers finished in fifth place and had 14 players registered at the end of the 2011/12 season.
They also won the opening game of this season 7-4 against Houghend Griffins.
David said: “The Vipers now look the part and certainly feel the part”
