URMSTON’S first ever live Christmas tree will be planted next month, as well as seven sapling trees along Station Road and Flixton Road, which councillors hope will serve as a glowing symbol of the town’s continuing regneration.

Cllr Lisa Cooke, said: “With the new development at Eden Square taking shape and so many fantastic businesses in the town, this is an incredibly exciting time for Urmston.

The Christmas tree, which will be positioned on the corner of Queens Road, will be lit up in an environmentally friendly fashion however, as it will be adourned with hundreds of solar powered lights.

In fact, Cllr Cooke and fellow Davyhulme councillors, Jonathan Coupe and John Reilly, supported Keep Trafford Green And Clean’s application to Trafford Housing Trust (THT) to fund environmentally friendly lighting for all the new trees, as part of the wider Ligh Up Urmston project.

The sapling trees have been funded by businesses which make up Urmston Partnership, as well as an elderly resident who took it upon herself to buy one of the trees on her own.

Christine McLaughlin, owner of Better Tuition and Keep Trafford Green and Clean member, said: “The new trees will beautify Urmston town centre and encourage shoppers to explore our eclectic mix of small local shops.”

Matthew Gardiner, THT chief executive, said: “Urmston has a thriving business community and I am delighted to be able to support the Partnership in this project.”
