TWENTY one caravans were completely destroyed in a huge fire at a Sale farm.
Firefighters were first called to New Manor Farm on Bradley Lane, off Chester Road, at around 2.50pm on March 25, following reports of a serious fire.
Eight fire crews were tackling the blaze at its height, the cause of which is yet to be determined, but gas cylinders attached to the caravans, which were being stored at the site close to Junction 7 of the M60, are thought to have exacerbated the fire.
No people were involved and there were no injuries.
Huge flames could be seen for miles around as the fire blazed for some time due to heavy winds.
Fire crew initially only had use of one water hydrant on the main road, but were able to access water from the nearby River Mersey and were able to extinguish the blaze by around 5pm.
Sale station manager, Paul Duggan, acted as incident commander: “It’s an unusual incident as much as it’s caravans.
“It’s been challenging because we’ve struggled for water with it being a remote site and some strong winds have been fanning the flames.”
He added that the crews had done a fantastic job to bring the fire under control in the face of such tough conditions.
Numerous police cars and ambulances were also at the scene and police cordoned off Bradley Lane for some time, but traffic on Chester Road and the M60 was unaffected.
Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
