Flixton 4 Pickering Town 0

FLIXTON produced their best performance of the season to progress to the third round of the FA Vase, after beating last year's quarter-finalists Pickering Town 4-0.

The home side started like they meant business and after just 10 minutes Joz Mitten sent a shot just wide of the post.

Leon Grandison was unlucky not to score a spectacular effort when he attempted to score direct from a corner, Pickering keeper Kevin Martin just managing to push the ball around the post.

Martin then denied Grandison again before Lee Wilkinson headed another chance wide of the post.

On the half hour mark Flixton opened up the Pickering defence once more, this time with a slick move that involved 12 passes, Mitten eventually heading against the inside of the post.

And on 42 minutes, the breakthrough finally came. Grandison was hacked down inside the box and although Mitten had his spot kick saved, he reacted quickest to stroke home the rebound.

As the second half began, Pickering pushed forward in search of an equaliser but it was Flixton who got the important goal.

Wilkinson played in Grandison and he raced into the box before shooting low and hard into the bottom corner.

Flixton keeper Andy Robertson had only one save of note to make from Steve Baxter and it was Martin who was the busier keeper, tipping over a Franny Vaughan shot.

Flixton increased their lead after 77 minutes when a Steve Tobin shot hit both posts and came out to Wilkinson, who made no mistake with the finish.

Tobin then completed the scoring with six minutes remaining with a shot from the edge of the box that left Martin no chance.

On Saturday November 25 Flixton are away at Ramsbottom United and the reserves are at home to Formby, both 3pm kick off.
