ALTRINCHAM deservedly extended their unbeaten run to four games with a 1-0 victory at Bootham Crescent.
They faced a York team whose recently-appointed manager, Steve Watson, had just been named manager of the month.
However, three of his team's four wins in February had been against lowly opposition.
After a bright start from Altrincham, the hosts began to settle and they looked likely to take an 18th-minute lead when Scott Burgess was put clear, but Alty keeper Tony Thompson made a fine block to keep out the Minstermen.
The second half was largely dominated by Altrincham.
Just two minutes into the half, Alty's loanee winger, Yusifu Ceesay got clear and elected to shoot rather than feed striker Jordan Hulme – the tall wingman's resulting shot coming back off the post.
Ten minutes later, York managed a rare threat at the other end, with Burgess weaving his way into the box, but his shot also came back off Thompson's right upright.
However, Altrincham now began to dominate possession and quell the vocal support of the 2,000-plus York spectators.
Eventually, their pressure told as leading scorer Josh Hancock scored a fine goal with an acrobatic shot from right of centre which beat goalkeeper Adam Bartlett to his right.
Despite York's introduction of their veteran heavyweight striker, Jon Parkin, Altrincham rode out the remaining time without any serious alarms.
The three points lifted them to sixth place in advance of Saturday's visit of fourth-placed Brackley Town, who lie just a point ahead of them.
ALTRINCHAM: Thompson, White, Hampson, Jones, Hannigan, Moult, Johnston, Williams, Hulme, Hancock, Ceesay. Subs: Dolan, Harrop, Sass-Davies, Densmore, Richman.
