A young girls football team based in Eccles has recently made it to Greater Manchester cup final. The Cubs, an under 13 girls team from Winton Wanderers Football Club, have worked incredibly hard all season and are now seeing it pay off.

The girls have been playing together for many years, slowly learning more and more about the game while developing their love for it as well.

In the semifinals, the Cubs faced a strong Altrincham side. The cubs scored the first goal yet Altrincham quickly brought it back to 1-1. Despite the close start, they soon stormed ahead and with some great goals and defensive work, managed to secure a 6-1 win.

Their team manager (Mike Farmer) reflected on the win, calling it a ‘Massive result’. The coaching team told the players beforehand ‘it’s over to you now to play football and decide our future’ and the girls certainly did that! With great pride, Mike said ‘Everyone did amazing today, we played some excellent football and scored some mega goals.’

In addition to the cup competition success, the young girls team have had an amazing league season. With their season finishing in just 4 games time, they still have a chance to finish top of their league. This would be an incredible achievement, especially considering they have only just transitioned from playing 9-a-side to 11-a-side. This change was hard work for the girls however they didn’t let it get in the way of their success!

In the final (which is yet to be scheduled) they will face another strong team, Tiki Taka Lionesses. This will undoubtedly be a tough game for the Cubs but they will try their best to bring home the trophy!
