A former Manchester United player and manager, 86, received a special visit from ex-football stars at his Sale care home.
Wilfred McGuinness’s wish came true after he was visited by former Manchester United and Manchester City players at Oakfield Croft.
This was part of the home’s Wishing Tree initiative, which helps residents revisit old careers and hobbies.
The famous, ‘Busby Babe’ took a walk down memory lane with ex-United defender, Tony Whelan, joining the celebrations of the former manager’s career.
Not only did McGuinness receive a personalised shirt and a speech from Whelan, but he was also joined by former Manchester City players Steve Fleet and Fred Eyre.
McGuinness, the youngest manager in the club’s history at age 31, said: “What a surprise to see everyone, I loved it. All the hilarious stories that everyone spoke about, it brought back some amazing memories.”
After making his Manchester United debut at aged 18, McGuinness went on to earn two caps for England, but his career was cut short after an early injury at age 22.
Eyre, now a BBC commentator, said: “I had the best day ever, reliving all the old memories and chatting to the old boy footballers.”
The football legend celebrated his iconic career, which saw United in three cup semi-finals, with special football cupcakes and decorations which included McGuinness’s England caps and shirts.
Daniel Cole, home manager at Oakfield Croft, said: “The team at Oakfield Croft made it their mission to surprise Wilf with a day he certainly won’t forget, and this special reunion did just that.”
