I HAVE read the many letters which point out that classroom assistants are now actually standing in front of a class of 30 children for one or more days.
We can see that no qualifications are required by these people, and the ones that are in evidence are little more than GCSE standard. What an appalling situation when there are so many trained graduate supply teachers available to do the job of teaching.
This was highlighted by the letter from a parent whose son, a qualified graduate, cannot find work, and yet classroom assistants are allowed to take full classes, often for several days a week. So I have a simple solution. Let the classroom assistants help by doing photocopying, putting up pictures etc. This reflects their qualifications (if any).
On the other hand, let's employ fully qualified supply teachers to teach the class. At least they have done four full years at university.
As a former teacher I can assure parents that the way to do this is through the PTA (Parent Teacher Association), who will, if necessary, demand answers from the headteacher. If these heads are so caring, let them forget saving money and employ true professionals.
