LAST week, Tory councillor Alex Williams gave a very rosy picture of Trafford council's environmental performance, disagreeing with Liberal Democrat activist Ian Chappell's charge of complacency. Unfortunately for Councillor Williams, in a nationwide survey, Trafford was placed in the bottom five in the UK for its environmental record. The charge of complacency seems proven to me.
Cllr Williams' letter neglected to mention that it was the Tories who voted AGAINST our Liberal Democrat motion on climate change. Our motion praised the work so far on sustainability issues and sought commitment from Trafford council to identify best practice and put in place a climate change strategy to achieve a borough-wide reduction in greenhouse gases. Cllr Williams is correct in saying that the Lib Dems abstained on the Tory motion because it deleted all the Lib Dems' well researched points.
The Lib Dems are seeking a step-up in action from Trafford council and to achieve this we suggested the all party working group of councillors to look at the issues in more detail.
I was very disappointed to receive less than one week's notice by email for the first meeting of the climate change and sustainability committee.
I couldn't make this meeting due to a commitment to my children and I'm now left wondering whether this short notice by email was a deliberate Tory ploy not to involve the Lib Dems in this most vital committee.
Cllr Jane Brophy, Trafford Liberal Democrat environment spokesperson
