I believe that the Government has shown rare common sense in its approval of a new generation of nuclear reactors in the UK.
Whilst it is hard to find anything to praise this Government for, I do believe that they should have credit for this decision, even if long overdue.
Nuclear energy is an essential part of the energy mix of UK and Europe. It provides a considerable number of jobs to this region, security of supply, ultra low carbon emissions and price reliability over the 40 to 60-year working life of a reactor. It supplies about 20 per cent of UK electricity and 31 per cent of EU electricity. I personally believe that the UK should aim for the EU average, not just to maintain existing capacity.
